The Zierikzee Historic Games Institute brings to life the cultural-historic estate of Schouwen-Duivenland through visual aids and music. The municipality of Zierikzee was closed down in 1997 and was transferred to the Schouwen-Duiveland municipality. The Mayor and the city councillors of Zierikzee decided to present the community with a theatrical performance: The Rebellion of Zierikzee.' Thanks to the community's enthusiasm for this event, the number of inhabitants of Schouwen-Duiveland took the initiative to establish the Zierikzee Historic Games in 1999. You will find the "Vlindertuin Berkenhof" (de Berkenhof Butterfly Garden) on the outskirts of a protected nature zone called "the Zwaakseweel" in the middle of the Zeeland polders. You will enter the garden and walk past the large cactus garden with many special varieties, a little bit of Mexico. Continue your walk past fountains, very tall banana plants and many varieties of passion flora. Of course, there are lots of butterflies. You can view the whole life cycle of the butterfly in this garden. With its 1400 m, the "Vlindertuin Berkenhof" is the largest butterfly garden in the Netherlands. After a stroll through the butterfly garden, you can visit the walking gardens. A green oasis of peace where you can encounter many varieties of birds. Seven nature- and environmental organisations from the Netherlands and Flanders are organising a joint campaign from the end of August 2005, to put the spotlight on the extraordinary nature of the Schelde. The Zeeschelde in Flanders and the Westerschelde in the Netherlands together form a unique, cross-border estuary which is unknown to many people. The "Scaldis" is a sailing tjalk designed for groups of people. There are weekend day trips and week-long trips on the Zeeland and South Holland waterways. It is a spacious ship where everyone can choose a favourite spot. The tub is for those who like to enjoy the wind, water and sun. The more active members of your group help sail the vessel while the people who wish to spend time with others can enjoy their favourite drink in the saloon. Trips generally start out from Zierikzee.Zeeland and South Holland have suitable waterways for every group. Die-hard sailing enthusiasts can indulge themselves, sailing in the water currents. The Grevelingen sea and the Veersemeer are waterways with still waters and lovely little islands, ideal for relaxing and taking it easy. The Reindert is a traditional charter sailing vessel with Zierikzee (Zeeland) as its home base. The passenger sailing vessel, Reindert, is well-suited for sailing for one or more days. The Reindert is ideal for business outings, meetings, parties, school trips, work weeks, family outings or for sailing with family and friends. It is a clipper that has a lot of room on deck where guests can safely sit or lie down. The guests assist with hoisting and operating the sails and halyards. This all takes place under the expert leadership of Skipper Aldert and his mate. Up to 50 guests can be accomodated for a day trip, and up to 31 guests can participate in an overnight trip. The Reindert is one hundred years old. It is 35 meters long and 6 meters wide. Its sails are 521 m2. There are two, thirty meter masts on the ship, which are two meters, fifty centimeters deep. The Dijkhuizen shipping company has two ships. The largest ship is a luxury passenger ship, "Lady Madeleine," for single day cruises. She was built in 1996 and can hold up to 400 people, 200 people inside and 200 people on the sundeck. Since the ship has been completely rebuilt to accommodate the handicapped, she has been awarded the International Certificate for wheelchair users. In this way, everyone can travel on this ship. The smaller ship is named the "Stad Veere." This vessel can hold 150 people inside and outside. The ship has two rooms: one for 58 people and a smaller one that holds 28 people. There is a deck where you can relax and enjoy the sunshine. Both ships have been certified by the Shipping Division.
